Dental Extractions

Dental ExtractionsDental extractions are sometimes necessary and cannot be avoided. The procedure is now more common than ever before and is considered a much better option than other restorative treatments.

Dr. Puerto may determine that you need a tooth extraction for any number of reasons. Some teeth are extracted because they have severe decay and infection, advance periodontal disease, damage, serious injury, or have broken in a way that cannot be repaired. Other teeth may need removal because they are poorly positioned in the mouth (such as impacted teeth), or in preparation for orthodontic treatment. Dr. Puerto will numb the area in your mouth with local anesthesia. Nitrous oxide sedation is available in our office if you would like to be more comfortable during the procedure.

It is common for patients to have their wisdom teeth extracted to prevent overcrowding or pain if the wisdom tooth doesn’t erupt properly. Wisdom teeth are located at the back of your mouth and serve no meaningful purpose, so it is a better option to extract them to prevent damage to the functional teeth.

We recommend dental extractions at our dental office only when all other procedures will not work. This is because we want our patients to keep their teeth to protect their smiles. When you do have an extraction, we will give you the support and proper care needed to heal quickly with as little discomfort as possible.

The removal of a single tooth can lead to problems related to your chewing ability, problems with your jaw joint, and shifting teeth, which can have a major impact on your dental health.

Your teeth deserve the best care. Dr. Puerto will discuss alternatives to extractions as well as the replacement of the extracted tooth.
